Braves Pull Away with Four-Run Sixth to Defeat Nationals 6-2
The Atlanta Braves broke open a tight game with a four-run sixth inning and defeated the Washington Nationals 6-2 Friday night at Truist Park. Washington remained within one run through five innings, but Atlanta’s middle of the order delivered the decisive blows, led by Michael Harris II, whose three-run home run highlighted the game-changing rally.
Pitchers Trade Zeroes Early
The game featured a strong pitching matchup early between Nationals left-hander Foster Griffin and Braves right-hander Bryce Elder.
Atlanta struck first in the opening inning when Matt Olson crushed a solo home run to give the Braves a 1-0 lead. The Braves added another run in the second after Jim Jarvis delivered an RBI single, but Griffin settled in afterward, keeping Washington within striking distance despite constant pressure from Atlanta’s lineup.
Nationals Stay Close
Washington finally broke through against Elder when CJ Abrams connected for a solo home run, trimming the deficit to 2-1.
The Nationals threatened several times during the middle innings, putting runners on base against Elder, but the Braves starter consistently escaped trouble with timely strikeouts and double-play balls. Elder turned in another quality outing before handing the game over to Atlanta’s bullpen.
Sixth Inning Decides the Game
The Braves put the game away in the bottom of the sixth.
Olson started the rally with a double before Ozzie Albies reached base. Harris then launched a towering three-run homer—his 20th of the season—into the seats to stretch Atlanta’s lead to 5-1.
Atlanta continued to apply pressure as Jarvis collected another RBI later in the inning, giving the Braves a commanding 6-1 advantage. The four-run frame completely shifted the momentum and left the Nationals with too much ground to make up.
Nationals Show Late Life
Washington managed one final run in the ninth when Andrés Chaparro hit a solo home run, but Atlanta reliever Elieser Hernández finished off the final three innings to secure the victory.
The Nationals’ offense struggled to generate sustained rallies, finishing with only the solo home runs from Abrams and Chaparro despite several opportunities against Braves pitching.
