UMBC Adds Veteran Coach Sean Neal to Men’s Basketball Staff
The UMBC men’s basketball program has added another experienced voice to its coaching staff as head coach Jim Ferry announced Thursday that Sean Neal will join the Retrievers as an assistant coach.
Neal arrives in Baltimore after spending nine seasons at St. Bonaventure, including the past four as the Bonnies’ associate head coach. The veteran coach brings extensive experience in recruiting, player development and building successful mid-major programs as UMBC prepares to defend its America East championships.
“We are extremely fortunate and excited to welcome a coach of Sean’s caliber to our staff this summer,” Ferry said in the university’s announcement. “I have always admired how Mark Schmidt and Sean built and led the St. Bonaventure program.”
Ferry added that Neal played an important role in making St. Bonaventure one of the nation’s premier mid-major programs and believes his knowledge will help UMBC continue competing for championships.
Neal helped build consistent winner at St. Bonaventure
St. Bonaventure won at least 20 games three times over Neal’s final five seasons with the program.
The Bonnies enjoyed one of their best seasons in program history in 2020-21, winning both the Atlantic 10 regular-season and tournament championships for the first time. St. Bonaventure earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament following the conference tournament victory.
The program continued its national rise during the 2021-22 season. St. Bonaventure climbed as high as No. 15 in the national rankings, marking the program’s first appearance in the Top 25 in approximately 40 years.
The Bonnies finished that season with 23 victories and advanced to the NIT semifinals. St. Bonaventure also collected six victories over power-conference opponents, including road wins at Virginia, Oklahoma and Colorado, while capturing the Charleston Classic championship.
Neal helped St. Bonaventure reach 20 victories and the Atlantic 10 semifinals during the 2023-24 season. The Bonnies then rebuilt much of their roster through the transfer portal and junior college ranks before winning 22 games and earning another NIT invitation in 2024-25.
That success in modern roster construction could be especially valuable for UMBC. College basketball programs must now evaluate and recruit players from the transfer portal while maintaining roster chemistry and developing returning players.
Neal was recognized by Silver Waves Media as one of the nation’s top assistant coaches during the 2025 Final Four in San Antonio. The recognition highlighted his work as a coach and recruiter, particularly during the transfer portal era.
Previous success at La Salle
Before joining St. Bonaventure, Neal worked under longtime head coach Dr. John Giannini at La Salle.
The Explorers reached the postseason twice during Neal’s time on the staff, highlighted by a run to the Sweet 16 of the 2013 NCAA Tournament. La Salle also won the Philadelphia Big 5 championship and finished the season ranked No. 24 nationally.
The Explorers earned notable victories over Villanova, Butler, Kansas State and Ole Miss during that memorable season. La Salle also won 21 games and reached the NIT during the 2011-12 campaign.
Neal began his basketball career at La Salle as a player from 2003 through 2007. The former point guard helped the Explorers finish third in the Atlantic 10 during the 2005-06 season, which was the program’s highest conference finish at the time.
Neal earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from La Salle in 2007 and completed his MBA at the university in 2011. He began his coaching career with The Hoop Group in New Jersey, assisting with grassroots tournaments, recruiting and the organization’s elite camps.
Joining a championship program at UMBC
Neal joins UMBC following one of the most successful seasons in program history.
The Retrievers finished the 2025-26 season with a 24-9 overall record and a program-best 14-2 mark in America East play. UMBC won the conference’s regular-season championship and captured the America East Tournament title to earn its third NCAA Tournament appearance in 40 seasons at the Division I level.
UMBC’s 24 victories finished one shy of the program record established by the 2017-18 team. The Retrievers also produced a school-record 12-game winning streak and went 15-2 at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.
UMBC finished a perfect 8-0 at home during America East regular-season play and won all three conference tournament games on its home floor. Ferry received a multi-year contract extension in April after guiding the Retrievers through the historic campaign.

Adding Neal represents a significant move for a UMBC program attempting to turn one championship season into sustained success.
Neal has experience recruiting at the Atlantic 10 level, rebuilding rosters through the transfer portal and preparing teams for postseason basketball. His time at St. Bonaventure showed that a well-run mid-major program can consistently compete against larger schools without sacrificing its identity.
UMBC will likely face increased expectations following its America East championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. The Retrievers will also receive every opponent’s best effort as the defending conference champions.
Neal’s experience should help Ferry manage those expectations while continuing to recruit players capable of keeping UMBC near the top of the America East.
The Retrievers are no longer simply trying to reach the conference’s upper tier. After winning 24 games and advancing to the NCAA Tournament, UMBC is building a program that expects to compete for championships every season.
Adding one of the country’s most respected veteran assistant coaches is another strong step in that direction.
