MSB: Ravens Receive Major Boost as Nnamdi Madubuike Cleared to Return, Begins Camp on Active PUP List

The Baltimore Ravens received some of the best injury news of the offseason Saturday as star defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike has been medically cleared by independent spine and cervical specialists to return to football activities. While Baltimore officially placed Madubuike on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list to begin training camp, the designation is considered precautionary rather than a setback. According to multiple reports, the Ravens expect the two-time Pro Bowler to continue ramping up his conditioning and could have him practicing as early as next week.

That represents a remarkable turnaround for one of the NFL’s top interior defensive linemen after a frightening neck injury ended his 2025 season after just two games. The injury required surgery and raised legitimate questions throughout the offseason about whether Madubuike would ever play football again.

Why the Active PUP List Matters

Being placed on the Active PUP list at the start of training camp is very different than beginning the regular season on reserve/PUP.

Players on the active list:

  • Count against the 90-man roster.
  • Can participate in meetings and rehab.
  • Can be activated at any time once medically ready.
  • Do not have to miss regular-season games.

According to reports, Baltimore’s decision is designed to allow Madubuike to gradually reacclimate to football while coaches and medical staff evaluate his conditioning after months away from contact.

Huge News for Baltimore’s Defense

Madubuike has become one of the league’s premier interior pass rushers. Since breaking out in 2023, he has consistently disrupted opposing quarterbacks while anchoring Baltimore’s defensive front.

His absence last season was felt immediately. Without him, the Ravens struggled to generate pressure from the interior, forcing opposing offenses to devote fewer resources to stopping Baltimore’s defensive tackles.

A healthy Madubuike changes everything.

With Trey Hendrickson added on the edge and Travis Jones returning inside, Baltimore suddenly has the potential to field one of the NFL’s deepest defensive lines.

Long Road Back

The recovery has been anything but simple.

Throughout the spring, optimism steadily grew that Madubuike could return, but Ravens officials repeatedly stressed that neck injuries require patience and that medical clearance would ultimately determine his future. General manager Eric DeCosta recently said everything was “pointed in the right direction,” though the organization remained cautious until doctors completed the evaluation process.

Saturday’s clearance marks the biggest milestone yet.

While he still has to work back into football shape, simply receiving clearance from independent spine specialists represents an enormous victory after many wondered whether his NFL career might be over.

Other Ravens on the PUP List

The Ravens also placed several other players on the Active PUP list entering training camp, including:

  • Travis Jones (DL)
  • John Jenkins (DL)
  • Teddye Buchanan (ILB)
  • Adisa Isaac (OLB)
  • Bilhal Kone (CB)

MSB Analysis

This is arguably the Ravens’ biggest “addition” of the offseason.

If Madubuike returns anywhere close to his Pro Bowl form, Baltimore’s defensive front becomes significantly more dangerous. His ability to collapse the pocket from the interior creates opportunities for edge rushers and makes life much more difficult for opposing quarterbacks.

The Ravens will understandably take a cautious approach after such a serious injury. There is no reason to rush one of the franchise’s cornerstone defenders. However, the fact that he has already been medically cleared and could return to practice next week is about as encouraging as Ravens fans could have hoped when training camp opened.

The road back is not finished, but Saturday’s news is a major step toward seeing one of Baltimore’s most important defensive players back on the field in 2026.
