Navy Offshore Sailing Captures Salty 100 Title with Masterful Performance in Buzzards Bay

The U.S. Naval Academy’s offshore sailing program continues to prove it is among the nation’s premier collegiate offshore racing teams.
This past weekend, Navy’s yacht Poseidon, skippered by senior Nico Martinez, captured first place in the prestigious Salty 100 while also earning a runner-up finish in the Parker Converse Tower Race during an impressive showing in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. The performance added another significant accomplishment to what has already been a remarkable 2026 campaign for the Midshipmen.
A Championship Weekend
Hosted jointly by the Beverly Yacht Club and Storm Trysail Club, the newly combined Salty 100 and Parker Converse Tower Race challenge crews with nearly 100 miles of demanding offshore sailing through Buzzards Bay, Vineyard Sound and the Elizabeth Islands.
The unique format allows competitors to make strategic routing decisions based on changing tides, currents and weather, making navigation just as important as boat speed.
Martinez and the crew aboard Poseidon excelled in every phase of the race.
During the opening 48-mile Tower Race, Poseidon crossed the line second among 11 boats. Instead of settling for a podium finish, the Midshipmen took advantage of changing weather during the overnight second leg of the Salty 100.
Choosing a clockwise route through Quicks Hole before the tidal current turned against them proved to be the winning decision. After navigating an intense weather cell and surviving light overnight winds, Navy maintained favorable current through Buzzards Bay to secure the overall Salty 100 victory.
Navigation Makes the Difference
Unlike traditional sailboat races that emphasize straight-line speed, offshore events reward tactical thinking.
Crews constantly evaluate:
- Wind shifts
- Ocean currents
- Weather systems
- Sail selection
- Crew management
- Navigation through narrow channels
Poseidon’s crew demonstrated exceptional decision-making throughout the nearly 100-mile challenge.
Their ability to anticipate current changes through Quicks Hole ultimately became one of the race’s defining moments.
Another Milestone for Navy Offshore Sailing
The victory continues an outstanding stretch for Navy’s offshore sailing program.
Just weeks earlier, the Midshipmen captured first in class during the Annapolis-to-Bermuda Ocean Race, one of offshore sailing’s premier collegiate events. Those victories highlight the depth of the Naval Academy’s offshore program under head coach Jesse Fielding, who has quickly built upon the program’s tradition of national excellence.
Few collegiate sailing programs consistently compete—and win—at this level in offshore distance racing.
Why the Salty 100 Matters
The Salty 100 has rapidly become one of the Northeast’s premier offshore races.
The event is designed to prepare crews for even longer ocean races by combining:
- Nearly 100 miles of racing
- Overnight navigation
- Variable weather
- Strong tidal currents
- Strategic route planning
Beginning in 2026, organizers paired the event with the historic Parker Converse Tower Race, creating one of the most challenging weekends on the East Coast collegiate sailing calendar.
MSB Take
Maryland sports fans often focus on football, lacrosse and basketball, but Navy’s offshore sailing program quietly remains one of the state’s elite athletic success stories.
Winning major offshore races requires leadership, teamwork, preparation and calm decision-making under constantly changing conditions—the same qualities expected of future naval officers.
With victories in both the Annapolis-to-Bermuda Race earlier this summer and now the Salty 100, the Midshipmen continue to establish themselves as one of collegiate sailing’s premier offshore programs. If this momentum continues into the fall season, Navy could add even more prestigious trophies to an already impressive 2026 campaign.
