Orioles vs. Mariners Series Preview: Baltimore Opens Critical West Coast Road Trip in Seattle

The Baltimore Orioles begin one of the most important stretches of their 2026 season Tuesday night when they open a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park.

Baltimore enters the series at 34-39, trying to gain ground in the American League Wild Card race, while Seattle comes in at 37-36 and remains firmly in contention in the American League West.

This series is more than just another stop on the schedule. The Orioles are beginning a challenging West Coast trip that includes series against Seattle, Los Angeles and Anaheim. A strong trip could put Baltimore back in the postseason conversation heading into July. A poor showing could create significant pressure as the trade deadline approaches.

The good news for Baltimore is that it enters Seattle with confidence. These clubs just met last week at Camden Yards, where the Orioles rebounded from an opening-game loss to win the final two contests and claim the series.

Now the Orioles must prove they can do it again on the road.

Recent History Between the Clubs

The Orioles and Mariners just wrapped up a competitive three-game series in Baltimore.

Seattle captured the opener behind a Josh Naylor grand slam and strong pitching. Baltimore responded by winning the next two games.

Brandon Young dominated the Mariners lineup in a 7-2 Orioles victory before Baltimore completed the series win with a 7-5 victory in the finale.

That series gave both clubs an excellent look at what they are about to face again.

The Orioles know Seattle’s pitchers. The Mariners know Baltimore’s young lineup.

Expect adjustments throughout the series.

Game 1 Pitching Matchup

Brandon Young (Baltimore)

5-1, 3.04 ERA, 42 strikeouts

Logan Gilbert (Seattle)

4-4, 3.62 ERA, 82 strikeouts

Game 1 features one of the most surprising pitching stories in baseball against one of the American League’s most established starters.

Young has emerged as a legitimate major-league starter in 2026. The Orioles have won nine of his ten starts, and his ability to consistently attack the strike zone has helped stabilize Baltimore’s rotation.

The right-hander already shut down Seattle once this season, allowing the Orioles to cruise to a 7-2 victory last week.

Seattle will undoubtedly make adjustments.

Young must continue locating his fastball and avoiding free passes against a lineup that features Julio Rodríguez, Cal Raleigh, Luke Raley and Josh Naylor.

Gilbert remains one of the toughest pitchers in baseball to face.

The Mariners right-hander attacks hitters with premium velocity, excellent command and the ability to generate strikeouts in key situations. Baltimore’s lineup must remain patient and avoid chasing pitches below the strike zone.

Key Orioles Hitters vs. Gilbert

Gunnar Henderson

The Orioles shortstop continues to drive Baltimore’s offense. Henderson’s power, speed and ability to impact games in multiple ways make him the most important hitter in the lineup.

Pete Alonso

Alonso has added the middle-of-the-order power Baltimore desperately needed. Seattle’s pitching staff will be focused on limiting his opportunities with runners on base.

Adley Rutschman

Rutschman’s switch-hitting ability gives Baltimore matchup flexibility. His approach could be critical against Gilbert.

Game 1 Edge

Slight Edge: Seattle

Gilbert is the more established pitcher, but Young has been outstanding and already beat Seattle once.

Game 2 Pitching Matchup

Kyle Bradish (Baltimore)

3-7, 4.30 ERA, 73 strikeouts

George Kirby (Seattle)

5-6, 4.07 ERA, 74 strikeouts

This may be the most intriguing matchup of the series.

Bradish continues to work his way back toward the form that made him one of the American League’s top starters before injuries interrupted his career.

The right-hander has shown flashes of dominance throughout the season.

When his slider is working, Bradish can neutralize almost any lineup.

Seattle counters with Kirby, one of baseball’s best strike-throwers.

Few pitchers in the league issue fewer walks than Kirby. Baltimore will need to capitalize when opportunities arise because free baserunners will be difficult to find.

The Orioles eventually broke through against Kirby during the previous series after he cruised through the early innings.

Baltimore hopes to duplicate that success.

Key Orioles Hitters vs. Kirby

Jackson Holliday

Holliday’s patience and plate discipline could prove vital against a pitcher who rarely beats himself.

Samuel Basallo

Basallo continues to emerge as one of Baltimore’s most dangerous offensive players. His power can change a game with one swing.

Game 2 Edge

Even

This feels like a classic pitcher’s duel.

Game 3 Pitching Matchup

Shane Baz (Baltimore)

4-6, 4.06 ERA, 67 strikeouts

Bryan Woo (Seattle)

Projected Starter

The series finale could be crucial.

Baltimore is expected to turn to Baz, whose season has featured flashes of top-of-the-rotation potential.

When Baz commands his fastball, he can dominate opposing lineups.

The challenge has been consistency.

Seattle is expected to counter with Bryan Woo.

The Orioles had success against Woo in Baltimore, scoring seven runs in a victory last week.

Seattle will be hoping for a much different outcome this time.

Key Orioles Hitters vs. Woo

Pete Alonso

Few hitters on the roster are more capable of punishing mistakes.

Gunnar Henderson

Henderson’s ability to drive the ball to all fields makes him dangerous in any ballpark.

Game 3 Edge

Slight Edge: Seattle

Woo gives Seattle a slight advantage on paper, particularly at home.

Orioles Players to Watch

Gunnar Henderson

Everything begins with Henderson.

The Orioles star continues to provide elite production on both sides of the ball and remains the face of the franchise.

Baltimore needs a big series from its best player.

Pete Alonso

Alonso’s power changes the complexion of the lineup.

Seattle’s pitching staff must account for him every time he steps into the batter’s box.

Adley Rutschman

Rutschman’s return has added stability to Baltimore’s offense and defense.

Jackson Holliday

Holliday continues developing into a cornerstone player.

His performance against Seattle’s elite pitching could significantly impact the series.

Samuel Basallo

Basallo has quickly become one of the most exciting young hitters in baseball.

Mariners Players to Watch

Julio Rodríguez

Rodríguez remains one of baseball’s most dynamic stars.

Baltimore pitchers must limit his opportunities to impact games.

Josh Naylor

Naylor already hurt Baltimore with a grand slam earlier this month.

The Orioles cannot allow him to hit with runners on base.

Cal Raleigh

Raleigh provides elite power from the catcher position.

Randy Arozarena

If healthy, Arozarena adds another dangerous weapon to Seattle’s lineup.

Keys to the Series

Orioles Must Play Better Defense

Defensive inconsistency has hurt Baltimore throughout the season.

Errors and missed opportunities have cost the Orioles games.

T-Mobile Park is not the place to give extra outs.

Win the Brandon Young Start

Young gives Baltimore its best opportunity to immediately seize momentum.

Stealing Game 1 would dramatically change the series outlook.

Keep Pressure on Seattle’s Starters

The Orioles found success against Seattle’s rotation last week by forcing long at-bats and increasing pitch counts.

Baltimore must do the same in Seattle.

Limit Julio Rodríguez

Few players impact games more completely than Rodríguez.

Keeping him off base is critical.

Series Prediction

This should be one of the better series of the week in the American League.

Seattle has the advantage of playing at home and possesses one of baseball’s strongest pitching staffs. Baltimore, however, enters the series with confidence after winning two of three against the Mariners last week.

If Brandon Young continues his breakout season and Kyle Bradish delivers a quality start, the Orioles have a realistic opportunity to win another series.

Seattle’s pitching depth and home-field advantage ultimately give the Mariners a slight edge.

Prediction

Mariners win the series, 2-1

Orioles Series MVP Prediction

Gunnar Henderson

Biggest Orioles X-Factor

Samuel Basallo

If Basallo continues his recent surge, Baltimore could leave Seattle with another important series victory.
