Chesapeake Baysox Weekly Recap: Bats Wake Up Late In Tough Stretch Against Somerset And Erie

Chesapeake Baysox Weekly Recap: Bats Wake Up Late In Tough Stretch Against Somerset And Erie

The Chesapeake Baysox closed out another busy week in the Eastern League with flashes of offensive firepower, strong pitching performances from some of the Orioles’ top prospects and a much-needed bounce back against the Erie SeaWolves. The week featured late-inning heartbreak, a breakout offensive game in Erie and several standout performances from rising names inside Baltimore’s farm system.

Chesapeake entered the week searching for consistency. The Baysox battled through a difficult series against the Somerset Patriots before traveling to Erie and finally finding some rhythm at the plate. Several Orioles prospects started to trend upward at the same time, especially infielder Aron Estrada, outfielder Anderson De Los Santos and left-hander Joseph Dzierwa.

Baysox Drop Tight Series Against Somerset

The week started with a difficult stretch against the Somerset Patriots, the Double-A affiliate of the Yankees. Somerset pitching controlled most of the early games in the series and repeatedly shut down Chesapeake with runners in scoring position.

One of the brightest moments came during a midweek victory when Chesapeake launched four home runs in a statement offensive performance. Ethan Anderson delivered one of his best games of the season while Carter Young continued to show gap power and improved plate discipline. The Baysox finally looked loose offensively after struggling to string together quality at-bats during the previous road trip.

Still, Somerset controlled much of the series with strong starting pitching. Yankees prospect Kyle Carr dominated Chesapeake during a 4-0 Patriots win. Carr struck out eight batters over 5.1 innings while Baysox hitters failed to generate consistent hard contact.

The biggest positive from the Somerset series came on the mound. Left-hander Joseph Dzierwa dazzled during his Double-A debut despite taking a loss. Dzierwa attacked hitters with confidence, mixed speeds effectively and generated swings and misses throughout the outing. The Orioles organization continues to push young arms aggressively through the system, and Dzierwa looked comfortable immediately against advanced hitters.

Evan Yates also continued a strong May stretch. The right-hander gave Chesapeake another quality start and kept games manageable despite limited offensive support. Yates has quietly become one of the Baysox’ most dependable starters during the month.

Erie Series Opens With Frustration

The road trip to Erie started poorly. The SeaWolves blanked Chesapeake 6-0 behind dominant pitching and timely hitting. Erie starter Joe Miller carried a no-hit bid deep into the game while Baysox hitters struggled badly against off-speed pitches.

Erie broke the game open during the fourth inning and never looked back. Tigers prospects Izaac Pacheco and Thayron Liranzo powered the offense while Chesapeake failed to answer offensively. Defensive mistakes also hurt the Baysox during several key innings.

At that point, Chesapeake looked stuck in another offensive rut. Strikeouts mounted, situational hitting disappeared and the lineup lacked energy.

Baysox Finally Break Through

Everything changed during the middle games of the Erie series.

Chesapeake snapped a five-game losing streak with a convincing 9-2 victory behind a huge offensive night from Anderson De Los Santos. The versatile infielder recorded four hits while the Baysox lineup consistently pressured Erie pitching from the opening inning.

Aron Estrada continued his strong offensive week with another productive game at the top of the order. Estrada has become one of the more reliable bats in the lineup because of his contact ability and aggressive approach early in counts.

Evan Yates delivered another strong start during the victory. The right-hander attacked the zone, limited damage and worked efficiently through five innings. Erie struggled to square him up consistently.

The momentum continued Thursday night when Chesapeake exploded for a 12-3 win over Erie. The Baysox launched four home runs and completely overwhelmed SeaWolves pitching.

Estrada homered.

Thomas Sosa homered.

Tavian Josenberger homered.

Fernando Peguero homered.

That type of power display had been missing for much of the season. Chesapeake attacked fastballs early in counts and consistently punished mistakes over the plate.

Joseph Dzierwa impressed again on the mound with nine strikeouts across 4.2 innings. The left-hander continues to climb quickly inside the Orioles organization because of advanced command and strong swing-and-miss ability. Baltimore’s pitching development staff clearly believes Dzierwa can move aggressively through the system if the consistency continues.

Players Trending Up

Aron Estrada

Estrada quietly put together one of the strongest weeks on the roster. Consistent contact, improved gap power and aggressive base running helped spark the offense during the Erie series. The infielder continues to look more comfortable against advanced pitching.

Anderson De Los Santos

De Los Santos delivered one of the best offensive performances of the week with a four-hit game against Erie. Hard contact to all fields stood out throughout the series.

Joseph Dzierwa

The left-hander may have turned into one of the biggest storylines inside the Baysox clubhouse. Dzierwa’s Double-A debut showed maturity beyond his age. Strikeout stuff paired with command always grabs attention inside the Orioles organization.

Evan Yates

Yates stabilized the rotation during a difficult week. Multiple strong starts kept Chesapeake competitive and prevented the losing streak from spiraling further.

Team Outlook

The Baysox still sit near the bottom portion of the Eastern League standings, but the roster contains plenty of intriguing Orioles prospects. Development remains the priority at Double-A, and several young players made meaningful progress this week despite inconsistent results overall.

Baltimore continues to rely heavily on Chesapeake as a proving ground for premium pitching prospects. Dzierwa, Yates and several bullpen arms all showed flashes during the week. Offensively, the organization hopes the breakout against Erie can create momentum heading into June.

Power production had disappeared for stretches earlier this month, but the four-homer explosion Thursday night could become a turning point if Chesapeake carries the approach forward into next week.

The Baysox now look to build consistency as the summer schedule heats up in Bowie. With several Orioles prospects beginning to settle into rhythm, Chesapeake may finally have the pieces to climb back into contention during the second half of the Eastern League season.
