COLLEGE PARK, Md. – On a windy, rainy Sunday aftern
oon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex, the #8 nationally-ranked (and #3 seed) Maryland Terrapins women’s field hockey advanced by shutting out #6 seed Michigan State, 3-0.
It was a total dominant performance for the Terrapins (13-5) over the Spartans (8-11). Maryland out-shot Michigan State 34-5 and held a 11-2 edge in penalty corners.
Three different Terrapins would score and the first goal came just 25 seconds into the game when Senior M Lein Holsboer’s (with an assist from Freshman D Sophie Giezeman) shot from just inside the circle went into the cage and her 11th goal of the season.
Only a few minutes later, at the 2:55 mark of the first half, it was Giezeman again with the assist, but this time, the benefactor from it was Freshman D Bodil Keus, who would dribble into the circle and then send a low shot that made it’s way into the cage for the second Maryland goal. It was Keus’ first goal of the season.
Maryland would continue to pepper Spartans Senior GK Katie Miller with shots for the rest of the first half and into the start of the second half but none would find the cage until after a penalty corner in the 55th minute for the Terrapins and Freshman M Brooke DeBerdine’s hard shot (assists from 5th-year Senior M Brooke Adler and Holsboer) sailed by Miller into the cage, giving Maryland the 3-0 lead.
Next up for the Maryland women’s field hockey team is a B1G Ten Semi-final match-up with #6 nationally-ranked (and #2 seed) Penn State Nittany Lions to see who will advance to B1G Ten Women’s Field Hockey Final. The game is schedule to begin at 1:30 pm and can be seen on BTN.
