Washington Spirit look to bounce back from last week’s loss

The Washington Spirit lost a close 1-0 match on Saturday to the North Carolina Courage and will look to bounce back this weekend. The game was moved from Friday to Saturday due to bad weather.

Spirit defender Paige Nielsen was red carded for a foul in the 24th minute, reducing their attack to 10 women. The Courage controlled much of the first half but Aubrey Bledsoe made two big saves to keep the Spirit in it. It was scoreless at the half.

The Courage struck in the 64th minute thanks to a goal from Debinha. The Spirit nearly had a chance to equalize in the 75th minute.

The loss puts the Spirit in fifth place in the NWSL standings with a 6-5-3 record. The Courage remain in first place with an 8-3-4 mark.

The Spirit will look to bounce back tomorrow night against the Chicago Red Stars at the Maryland SoccerPlex
