Washington Capitals Beat Barry Trotz and the New York Islanders 4-1

The Washington Capitals defeated Barry Trotz’s New York Islanders 4-1 coaching his first game against his former team. The Capitals played great against the Islanders tonight, and Tom Wilson stayed red hot scoring two goals continuing his four game goal streak.

The Capitals started the night trailing by a goal when Islanders forward Valtteri Filppula scored a goal in the first minute of the game. The Capitals didn’t let that early goal effect there game plan though

Nicklas Backstrom delivered a beautiful pass Tom Wilson to tie the game, and minutes later Nic Dowd scored his third goal of the year to give the Capitals a 2-1 lead.

The Capitals during the second period of fought hard to hold onto their 2-1 in a goalless period. The Capitals penalty kill did there job blocking tons of shots to keep the lead.

Later in the third period Nicklas Backstrom delivered another beautiful pass to Tom Wilson while on the powerplay to give the Capitals a 3-0 lead. The Capitals did there best to help Wilson get his first NHL hat-rick, but Alex Ovechkin got a breakaway and scored an empty net goal for his 18 goal of the season.

Braden Holtby played another great game tonight stopping 32 shots, and was lights out while the Capitals where shorthanded. Holtby showed off his great goaltending skills against not only his former head coach Barry Trotz, but also against his former goalie coach Mitch Korn who went to New York with Trotz.

MSB’s star of the night has to go to Tom Wilson who scored had three points (2 goals, 1 assist) and also had two hits. Wilson has been one of the best players in the NHL since coming off his 16 game suspension.
