Vancy Honeycutt hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning to lead the Chesapeake Baysox to a 9-7 victory over the Harrisburg Senators Friday night in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The teams were tied 6-6 after nine innings before Chesapeake scored three runs in the 10th.
Harrisburg scored once in the bottom of the 10th and loaded the bases with two outs, but a strikeout ended the rally. Honeycutt went four-for-six with a homer, triple, two doubles, four RBIs and three runs scored.
Baysox and Senators Trade Leads
The Harrisburg Senators scored first in the second inning after Chesapeake pitcher JT Quinn issued four walks. Devin Fitz-Gerald drew a bases-loaded walk to give Harrisburg a 1-0 lead.
Chesapeake responded with a run in the third inning against Harrisburg pitcher Blake Brown. Later in the inning, Ethan Petry hit a solo home run, his 14th of the season at Double-A, to put the Senators ahead 2-1.
The Baysox scored four runs in the fourth inning against Kyle Luckham to take a 5-2 lead. Harrisburg cut the deficit to 5-3 in the bottom of the inning when Fitz-Gerald doubled and scored on an error following a Branden Boissiere groundball.
The fifth inning passed with both teams going down in order. In the sixth, Harrisburg tied the game 5-5 after two walks and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with no outs. Fitz-Gerald walked to load the bases. Then a throwing error by Ethan Anderson on an attempted double play allowed Cortland Lawson and Fitz-Gerald to score.
Chesapeake Baysox Win in the 10th
Ethan Petry led off the seventh inning with a single. One out later, TJ White doubled to score Petry and put Harrisburg ahead 6-5. Chesapeake answered with a two-out RBI single from Ethan Anderson to tie the game at 6-6.
Harrisburg went down in order in the eighth and ninth innings. Jhancarlos Lara threw a one-two-three ninth for the Senators. Sandy Gaston entered for Harrisburg in the 10th and took the loss, moving to 3-5.
With a runner at third and one out in the 10th, Honeycutt hit his two-run homer to put the Baysox ahead. Another run scored following a two-out error, extending Chesapeake’s lead to 9-6.
Cortland Lawson singled with one out in the bottom of the 10th, and Nick Mitchell hit a sacrifice fly to score TJ White, cutting the deficit to 9-7. Fitz-Gerald then singled and Boissiere walked to load the bases with two outs, but a strikeout ended the game.
Long, Error-Filled Game
The teams combined for 17 walks, four errors and seven unearned runs. Fitz-Gerald led Harrisburg by going three-for-four with a double, one RBI, two runs scored and two walks.
The game lasted three hours and 35 minutes, marking the longest of the season for the Senators. Harrisburg is scheduled to play again Saturday at 6:00 p.m., with right-hander Yoel Tejeda (0-4) listed as the starter.
