The University of Maryland Eastern Shore women’s volleyball team defeated South Carolina State in four sets Friday, 26-24, 25-16, 21-25 and 25-22, at the Hytche Center in Princess Anne, Maryland. Rayah Howell led the attack with 13 kills while hitting .478.
The victory opened the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women’s volleyball team’s home schedule. The Hawks took the first two sets, dropped the third and closed the match with a tightly contested fourth set.
University of Maryland Eastern Shore Women’s Volleyball Wins at the Net
South Carolina State challenged the Hawks in the opening set, but University of Maryland Eastern Shore secured a 26-24 win. The Hawks then claimed the second set 25-16 to build a 2-0 match lead before South Carolina State answered with a 25-21 victory in the third.
The fourth set featured 11 ties and six lead changes before University of Maryland Eastern Shore finished with a 25-22 win. The Hawks recorded 10.5 team blocks compared with five for South Carolina State and added eight service aces.
Malaysia Shaw finished with 10 kills and six block assists, while Jayda Hutchins recorded 10 kills, eight digs and two service aces. Karielys Melendez contributed seven kills, nine digs and three block assists.
Jocelyn Torres led the team with 22 assists, and Kate-Linh Eden added 15 assists. Arianna Warner Torres recorded a team-high 15 digs.

University of Maryland Eastern Shore is scheduled to remain at home against North Carolina Central on Sunday, September 27, at 1 p.m. The match is scheduled to take place inside the Hytche Center.
