The Morgan State Bears open MEAC play vs N.C. Central

The Morgan State Bears football team looks to resume play for the first time in almost three weeks after the Oct. 3 shooting on campus cancelled their home coming game against Stony Brook that was scheduled for Oct. 7. 

After two weeks of preparation the Bears are starting conference play and their first MEAC opponent is the 5-1 #10 North Carolin Central Eagles. The Eagles are coming off a 34-23 win at #25 Elon. N.C. Central leads the all time series 24-18-2 with the Eagles wining the last six contests. The Bears also come into this game 1-4 after a losing to Yale 45-3 on Sep. 30.

The Eagles come in with the number one offense in the MEAC averaging 35.3 points per game and have the leading rusher redshirt senior Latrell Collier  and receiver Junior Devin smith in the conference.

On defense the Eagles are the second worst scoring defense in the conference allowing 28.3 points per game. The Eagles do still have two players tied for the top of the MEAC in sacks Sophomore linebacker Jayden Flaker and defensive lineman Kendrick DuJour who both have 4 1/2 sacks. DuJour is also at thee top of the conference in tackles for loss with seven while Flaker also leads the conference in tackles.

The Bears come into this game with the number one defense in the conference only allowing 24.4 points per game and only allow 330.2 yards per game. Morgan also leads the MEAC in interceptions with six and are third in the country in turnovers gained. Jordan Toles leads the team and conference with three. Jae’Veyon Morton also has two which is tied for second in the conference on the team.

This two week break could be beneficial for the Bears offense who have performed below expectations to this point in the season. To this point the bears are ranked last in scoring offense averaging and yards per game in the MEAC averaging 13.6 points per game and 228.6 yards per game respectively. The Bears have settled in with Dominique Anthony as their starting quarterback to this point. Anthony’s favorite target has been Treveyon Pratt who is fourth in the conference in receiving yards. Pratt has 207 yards and two touchdowns. 

The Bears are scheduled to play the Eagles Tonight at Hughes Stadium with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The game will also live on ESPNU and WEAA, 88.9.
