Terps Goin’ Bowlin’: Maryland Draws Auburn in TransPerfect Music City Bowl

Maryland Terrapins will draw a tough opponent in the Auburn Tigers on December 30th at 2pm. Maryland has faced the Tigers 3 times in the past.

The Maryland Terrapins football team as of 3:54pm is heading the TransPerfect Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tennessee at Nissan Stadium. The Terps finished 7-5 this season and have a chance for a second straight 8-win season but will have to deal with the likes of the Southeastern Conference’s 6-6 Auburn Tigers who almost upended the Alabama Crimson Tide at Jordan-Hare Stadium not too long ago in the Iron Bowl.

According to X (formerly known as twitter), Auburn’s coach Hugh Freeze is excited about the prospect of facing Maryland as he is actually good friends with Mike Locksley. “I’ve known Mike for awhile and he’s a great coach. He definitely turned the team around and we’re looking forward to facing the Terrapins in Nashville,” says Freeze, “should be a great game for both storied college programs.”

The payout for the Music City Bowl is one of the highest non-New Year’s Six bowls because due to its proximity towards the New Year’s Eve holiday. This year’s payout will be $6 million between both teams. ABC will be the television network to watch for the game.

Personally, I believe that this is a very big win for the Terrapins and Tigers alike due to the fact that the teams are playing on a prime Saturday afternoon slot. The Auburn Tigers are a very formidable foe and Maryland has seen them 3 times with a 1-2 mark, facing them last time in 1983 when Auburn was the No. 3 team in the nation at 7-1 and the Terrapins were No. 7 at 7-1.

Auburn took the win, 35-23, as Esiason threw for 311 yards and 2 TD in that game. According to sports-reference.com: Esiason said after the game in the papers, “that game hurt us.”

We at Maryland Sports Blog congratulate the Terrapins Football Team on a good season and a postseason berth in a pretty significant bowl prior to New Year’s Eve.
