Terps fall short to Illinois, 78-67, in Madison Square Garden.

The University of Maryland men’s basketball team fell short today to Illinois by a score of 78-67.

Despite the Terrapins recent loss to the highly ranked, Michigan State Spartans, coming into the matchup, the 15-5 and 13th overall ranked Terrapins were highly favored in this matchup against this 5-14 Illinois basketball team.

This was a highly anticipated game for the Maryland Terrapins with the game taking place in Madison Square Garden in New York City but they couldn’t finish the job against Illinois.

Bruno Fernando, a potential first round pick, was the Terrapins leading scorer, finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds on 6-9 shooting. Anthony Cowan Jr, finished not far behind with 18 points and 5 assists on 4-10 shooting. Overall, it was a poor shooting night, and a lack of scoring, with only 3 players in double figures.

Illinois’ freshman guard, Ayo Dosunmu finished with 20 points on the night in the starting lineup, while backup guards Tevian Jones and Andres Feliz finished with 18 and 15 points respectively.

Unfortunately with two tough losses in a row, the Terrapins will likely fall in the rankings, but hopefully a winning streak in February can get them back to that status.

The Terps will take on Northwestern on Tuesday, January 29th back at home in the XFINITY Center in College Park.
