St. Mary’s College of Maryland Women’s Field Hockey Gets Two Goals From Safi Stimely in 5-3 Win

St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s field hockey defeated Meredith College 5-3 in a non-conference game Saturday, Oct. 10, in St. Mary’s City, Md. Senior defender Safi Stimely scored twice to record her first career multi-goal game as St. Mary’s College of Maryland improved to 5-6.

Meredith College opened the scoring at 6:53, but St. Mary’s College of Maryland answered with three goals during a three-minute span in the second period. Stimely converted a penalty stroke, Shelby Wurzburger scored her first career collegiate goal, and Olivia Schwendeman added a goal as the Seahawks took a 3-1 halftime lead.

Safi Stimely Completes Two-Goal Performance

St. Mary’s College of Maryland had an opportunity to extend its lead early in the third period, but Meredith College goalkeeper Lyla Burdine stopped Josie Mascolo’s penalty-stroke attempt. Stimely then scored at 40:59 to complete her two-goal performance.

Kristina Wujciak scored at 43:00 for her first goal of the season, extending the St. Mary’s College of Maryland lead to 5-1. Burdine finished with 11 saves for Meredith College.

Meredith College scored twice in the fourth period to cut the deficit to 5-3. Maya Kirstein scored with an assist from Marissa Tilgner at 51:36, and Megan Ingenito converted a penalty stroke at 57:52.

Kirstein took a shot at 59:47 that was blocked and led to the game’s final penalty corner with six seconds remaining. St. Mary’s College of Maryland cleared the corner to secure its fifth win of the season.

St. Mary’s College of Maryland Controls Statistical Battle

St. Mary’s College of Maryland finished with a 31-9 advantage in shots and held a 16-5 edge in shots on goal. The Seahawks also earned 22 penalty corners, compared with five for Meredith College, and three penalty strokes were awarded in the game.

Tilgner scored one goal, added one assist and finished with four shots for Meredith College. Kirstein recorded four shots, including two on goal, while Sophia Kent made one save and allowed one goal through the first three quarters for St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Caroline McDonald made one save and allowed two goals.

St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s schedule continues Oct. 13 at Wilson in Chambersburg, Pa., at 4 p.m. The Seahawks will then host Immaculata on Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. at JLR Stadium in St. Mary’s City, Md.
