Same Song Different Year As Marshall Beats Navy 49-7

Marshall completed a 47 yard pass on the first play of the game and never looked back as they sunk Navy 49-7. Talik Keaton caught that pass and finished with five catches for exactly 100 yards. Quarterback Grant Wells went 20-30 for 333 yards and 2 picks. On the ground Rasheen Ali had 14 rushes for 59 yards but found the end zone four times.

Navy tried both Xavier Arline and Tai Levatai but neither got the offense going consistently. Arline led them to their only touchdown of day and got the pitch game going for a couple good runs. Lavatai who entered as the better passer struggled in that department going one of six for 8 yards. He suffered a knee injury in the second half so most likely Arline will start against Air Force next week. Marshall ended the game with nine sacks resulting in 42 yards lost.

The defense kept this from being worse by forcing 3 turnovers. They included 2 interceptions and a fumble recovery. The Herd also had 3 other fumbles which they recovered. Kevin Brennan had 6 tackles, recovered a fumble, and had a pick to lead the defense.

The Midshipmen finished with 363 yards rushing and had the ball for 41:19. In normal games that would lead to Navy wins but not today. James Harris was the most productive fullback today with 11 rushes for 80 yards. Arline finished with 89 yards on 16 carries.

Next week Air Force comes to town for the first leg of the Commander In Chief’s Trophy. This game was moved from the first Saturday in October to next Saturday to honor the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Kickoff is at 3:30 in Annapolis. The game will be on CBS.
