Salisbury Women’s Volleyball Rallies to Defeat Mary Washington in C2C Invitational Opener

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Salisbury University women’s volleyball team rallied from an opening-set loss to defeat the Mary Washington Eagles 3-1 (17-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-18) in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Invitational opener Oct. 2 at Ron Rosner Arena.

Mary Washington took the first set behind an 8-1 run to lead 12-6 and closed it out 25-17. Salisbury responded with strong showings in the final three sets, including a 10-4 run in the second set and a decisive 9-of-10 stretch in the fourth to earn the comeback victory.

McTaggart and Altieri Lead Salisbury

Kiley McTaggart led Salisbury with 18 kills and 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season and fourth in six matches. Julie Altieri dished out 41 assists and added 16 digs for her own double-double, the 54th of her career.

Ellie Mitchell recorded 11 kills with a .348 hitting percentage, while Sophia Tapia contributed eight kills, three solo blocks and two service aces. Elizabeth Gordon added six kills at a .444 clip. Sophia Blaufuss led the team with 17 digs and five assists. Elizabeth Villegas added three service aces and five digs.

The Sea Gulls finished with a .206 hitting percentage compared to Mary Washington’s .198 and secured their ninth consecutive win over the Eagles since Sept. 30, 2023.

Salisbury’s ability to rebound after the first-set loss was key behind strong contributions across the lineup. McTaggart and Altieri’s double-doubles underscored their impact, while Mitchell, Tapia, Gordon, Blaufuss and Villegas provided valuable support.

The victory extended Salisbury’s winning streak against Mary Washington to nine matches and marked a successful start to the C2C Invitational.

The Sea Gulls were scheduled to face UC Santa Cruz in the next Invitational game Oct. 3 at 1:30 p.m. at Ron Rosner Arena.
