Field hockey opened the season 4-0, football began 1-0 after a 31-0 shutout, and women’s volleyball entered the poll’s receiving-votes category at 5-2.
Salisbury University Field Hockey Ties for No. 2
Salisbury University field hockey tied Tufts for No. 2 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division III National Coaches Poll dated Sept. 15. Both teams received 438 points, trailing No. 1 Christopher Newport with 475 points and finishing ahead of No. 4 Johns Hopkins with 385 and No. 5 Williams with 375.
The Salisbury University Sea Gulls moved to 4-0 after defeating Washington College 2-0 and then-No. 9 Messiah 3-2 in double overtime. Freshman Layla Kent scored twice during the week, including the tying goal against Messiah in the final seconds of regulation, and earned State University of New York Athletic Conference Offensive Athlete of the Week honors.
Salisbury University field hockey was scheduled to host No. 4 Johns Hopkins on Wednesday, Sept. 16, before an idle weekend.
Salisbury University Football Reaches No. 14
Salisbury University football rose three spots to No. 14 in the D3football.com Top 25 for Week 2. The Salisbury University Sea Gulls received 248 points and opened the season with a 31-0 shutout of McDaniel College.
Quarterback SyRus McGowan threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns against McDaniel College, with both touchdowns received by Brayden Rogers. Dylan Lyerly recorded seven tackles and an interception as Salisbury University opened with a 1-0 record.
Salisbury University football was scheduled to host Washington & Lee on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m.
Salisbury University Women’s Volleyball Receives Votes
Salisbury University women’s volleyball received 25 points in the AVCA-Taraflex Division III Women’s Volleyball Poll dated Sept. 16. The Salisbury University Sea Gulls held a 5-2 record after going 1-2 at the Tufts Invitational.
Salisbury University women’s volleyball lost to No. 2 Trinity (Texas) and Bowdoin before defeating then-No. 21 Tufts 3-2. Junior libero Sophia Blaufuss recorded 47 digs, averaging 3.92 digs per set, in her first action at libero this season and earned her first career Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor.
Women’s volleyball was scheduled to play Benedictine (Ill.) twice at the Batten Quad in Virginia Beach, Friday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m. The team was then scheduled to play the 19th-ranked host Batten Marlins at 3 p.m. Saturday.
