Red Sox top O’s in extras, 2-1

Baltimore — Andrew Benintendi connected on a solo home run in the top of the 12th inning to give Boston a 2-1 win over the Orioles Wednesday night.

Baltimore right hander Yefrey Ramirez (L, 0-1) retired the first two batters in the 12th before allowing the round tripper to the Boston left fielder.

Had it not been for a great play by another Red Sox outfielder, Benintendi would not have even come to bat.

With one out in the bottom of the 11th, Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini launch a towering fly ball to center field off Red Sox reliever Ryan Brasier (W, 2-1).

The Orioles were poised to walk it off, except Boston center fielder Jackie Bradly, Jr. had other ideas, making an outstanding grab and stealing a home run from Mancini.

Mancini did his best to end the game to innings earlier, by leading off the inning with a double, but he was stranded at third.

Neither starter figured in the decision, but both gave their team a chance to win, especially Boston’s Chris Sale.

Sale tossed eight strong inning, allowing just one run on three hits and striking out 14. He even threw in an “immaculate inning” in the 7th.

Red Sox right fielder Rookie Betts opened the scoring in the 3rd, with a solo home run off Orioles starter Andrew Cashner.

Cashner wouldn’t allow any additional runs in his six innings of work.

Mancini tied things up in the bottom of the 6th, driving in right fielder Joey Rickard with a double to deep center off Sale.

The Orioles fall to 13-24 on the season.

Baltimore is off tomorrow and will open up a three game series against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night.
