Ravens Sign Former First Overall Pick, Clowney

The Baltimore Ravens have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with former number one overall pick, defensive end, Jadeveon Clowney.

A two-time All-American at South Carolina and the SEC defensive player of the year in 2012, Clowney was selected by the Houston Texans during the 2014 NFL draft. Clowney had high expectations coming into the NFL, that many believe he has failed to live up to during his nine year NFL career.

Injuries have had a huge impact for the lack of strong production for Clonwey throughout his career, as he as only played in every game once in his career. They two seasons in which he played more then 14 games were also the two best season of his career coming in 2017 and 2018. In both seasons Clowney was named to the pro bowl and in each season recorded nine sacks.

Clowney would be traded from Houston to the Seattle Seahawks before the start of the 2019 season. Clowney would only play in 13 games as a Seahawk, recording just three sacks, before signing a one-year deal with the Tennessee Titans for the 2020 season. However, a knee injury in 2020 would limit Clowney to just eight games as he was placed on injured reserve midway through the year.

Clowney has spent the last two seasons with the Cleveland Browns, where it looked like he was revitalizing his career. In 2021, Clowney recorded nine sacks his most since 2018. Clowney would re-sign with the Browns for the 2022 season but frustration between Clowney and the Browns over his usage would lead to Clowney being inactive for the final regular season game. Clowney would finish the 2022 season playing in 12 games and recording just two sacks.

The Ravens were in desperate need of an additional pass rusher after the departure of Justin Houston. Clowney now adds a veteran presence to a young group that consists of Odafe Oweh, David Ojabo, and rookie Tavius Robinson. Veteran linebacker Tyus Bowser remains on the NFI list and has yet to practice this preseason.
