Preview: Maryland vs Penn

The fourth-ranked Maryland men’s lacrosse team has a tough task ahead as they face the sixth-ranked Penn Quakers. In series history, the Terps have never lost to the Quakers winning all 15 match-ups dating back to when the teams first played in 1924. Last year though, the game was much tighter than the Terps expected. It went into overtime, however, Maryland was able to prevail winning 13-12.

Maryland

Maryland, 2-0 on the season, comes into this game after a much tighter game last week against Richmond. They had to come back from being down five goals in the fourth quarter to win a game against an unranked Richmond squad. It was a much different Maryland team than we saw week one against High Point. They scored eight fewer goals in the first three quarters than the week before, until that fourth quarter, six-goal explosion.

Penn

Penn, on the other hand, will be playing their first game of the season. This is due to the Ivy league rule in which teams can’t have their first official practice until February 1. Penn has one of the most dynamic offenses in the country led by a pair of stars. Sam Handley the giant of the two is a 6’5 215-pound midfielder who will use his size to terrorize opposing teams. Handley was one of the best freshmen in the country last year, and is on the Tewwaraton pre-season watch list. On the other hand, undersized senior attackman Adam Goldner stands at 5’9. Goldner, even with his undersized frame, is one of the best goalscorers in the country scoring 56 goals last year.

This game could go either way. For Maryland to win, however, they need to capitalize on the fact that this is Penn’s first game of the season. If they can come out the gates firing and take a big early lead then things will be looking very good for the Terps.

The game will take place at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium. The opening faceoff is slated for 1pm and the game is being streamed on BTN+.
