Orioles Recall D.L. Hall, Select Jesus Aguilar

The first moves of the September call ups have been made this afternoon. The Baltimore Orioles recalled pitcher D.L. Hall, and selected the contract of first baseman Jesus Aguilar. To make room for Aguilar on the 40-man roster Richie Martin was designated for assignment.

D.L. Hall is back with the Orioles after about three weeks in Norfolk with the Tides. The reason for him being sent down was to prepare him to pitch out the bullpen for the rest of the season as the Orioles are trying to limit his innings this year. D.L. pitched three and two/thirds of an inning in his debut against the Tampa Bay Rays, striking out six and is looking to build off his debut.

Jesus Aguilar is primarily a first baseman, but he also plays third base as well. The former All-Star was released by the Marlins and was signed to a minor league contract yesterday by the Orioles. In 2018 Aguilar made the All-Star team and swatted 35 home runs with the Milwaukee Brewers. This season Aguilar has batted .236 with 15 home runs and 49 runs batted in. At this point in the season it’s likely Aguilar will be an occasional starter at first base and designated hitter.

Richie Martin has been designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. With a little over two years of service time the two options for him are to go through Outright Waivers or to be released from the organization. Martin is a career .212 hitter at the major league level and a .234 hitter at Triple-A. At 27 it’s unlikely that he stays with the organization past this year due to the surplus of talent in the farm system.
