Orioles acquire Smith Jr. from Jays

The Baltimore Orioles have acquired 26-year old outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for international signing bonus money.

Smith was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays to make room for Clay Buchholz on their 40-man roster. He batted .262 in 35 games with Toronto last season and is a career .293 hitter in 47 major league games with the Jays.

Orioles general manager Mike Elias put out a statement on the transaction.

“Dwight Smith is a young outfielder with a strong track record of performance and a plus hit tool from the left side. We like adding him to what has become a deep and varied outfield mix in camp”
