Navy & UMBC Faceoff in Men’s Lacrosse

Navy lacrosse team warm up
Navy meets UMBC on Friday, Feb. 15 at 7:00 pm ET.

Navy will host UMBC on Friday night at Marine-Corps Memorial Stadium in men’s lacrosse action. The Midshipmen are coming off a season-opening,13-8, victory over Vermont last week. This will be the Retrievers first game of the regular season. The opening face-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm ET.

Last year the in-state rivalry returned after a 15-year absence. Navy won the game 7-3 to move to 23-4 in the all-time series. The schools share a coaching connection. UMBC’s head coach Ryan Moran was an assistant coach at the Naval Academy from 2006-2008, helping lead the Mids to two Patriot League titles (2006 & 2007) under head coach Richie Meade.

In their opening victory over Vermont, Navy’s Greyson Torain and Ryan Wade had impressive games. Torain, senior midfielder, had six points on five goals, becoming only the ninth Midshipmen midfielder to reach 100 points at the Academy. Wade, also a senior midfielder, contributed six points on one goal and five assists. It was the 25th consecutive game in which Wade scored a point. Additionally, Christian Daniel, sophomore attackman, added two goals and two assists to the Navy win.

On the UMBC side, the Retrievers’ top five point-producers from 2018 return to the field this season. Leading the attack will be senior midfielder Billy Nolan who accounted for 34 points (20 goals, 14 assists) last year. Steven Zichelli, sophomore attackman, is hoping to continue the good results from his rookie campaign, in which he scored 27 points on 17 goals and 10 assists.

Next week, Navy will host Maryland at noon on Feb. 23rd. UMBC will head to Richmond for a Tuesday afternoon match. fffff
