Navy Football Defeats Wagner in Home Opener

On Saturday the Navy Midshipmen defeated the Wagner Seahawks 24-0 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in teams home opener. The win gives new head coach Brian Newberry his first career win.

The shutout is also Navy’s first shutout victory since defeating Army 34-0 all the back in 2008. The game was delayed twice due to weather for a total of an hour and 32 minutes. The first delay occurred just over 20 minutes prior to kickoff and then again late in the third quarter.

Despite the delays the Midshipmen came out sharp and neutralized a strong passing attack by the Seahawks- holding them to just 143 total yards through the air and 4.1 yards per attempt. On the other side of the ball Navy’s offense looked much sharper than in the opener against Notre Dame, gaining over 408 yards of total offense including 163 yards through the air on 18 attempts.

The Mids will go on the road to take on Memphis in their AAC opener this Thursday night on ESPN.
