Navy defeats #25 Virginia 66-58

Navy coach Ed DeChellis said he wanted to test his team in the non-conference season. He scheduled trips to Virginia and Louisville around a visit from Virginia Tech in the Veterans Classic. It paid off tonight as the Midshipmen beat #25 Virginia 66-58 in Charlottesville. With 8:45 left in the game UVA tied the game at 55. The only points the Cavaliers scored the rest of the game was a meaningless three with 15 seconds left. This is the first win for Navy over a top 25 team since 1986 when David Robinson led the Mids to the Elite Eight.

John Carter Jr. hit a three with 24 seconds left to seal it. Those were his only points in the second half. He finished with 19 for the game. Sean Yoder added 15. Navy played without starters Austin Inge and Patrick Dorsey. Another starter Richard Njoku only played 9 minutes due to a foot injury.

Virginia was led by East Carolina transfer Jayden Carter. He finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. The Cavaliers were 4 of 16 from 3 point range and were outrebounded 35-30. Navy hosts the Veterans Classic on Friday evening. The first game is Utah State vs Richmond at 6pm followed by Navy vs Virginia Tech 35 minutes after game 1. The Hokies opened their season with a rout of Maine tonight. Both games will be on CBS Sports Network.
