Nationals select third baseman Mendoza with 94th pick in 2019 MLB Draft

On June 4, 2019, the Washington Nationals selected third baseman Drew Mendoza with the 94th overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft.

Mendoza, 21, is a 6’8”, 225 pound third baseman that will come out of Florida State and will likely join the major league roster in the next few years.

”Left handed, he’s got home run pop that’s going to work at the next level. He draws walks, which helps, but there’s a lot of swing and miss. He kind of had and up and down year this year, this is a guy that was solid high school prospect, but had a strong commitment to Florida State,” according to MLB’s Jonathon Mayo.

Mendoza put up a .320/.482/.631 line for the Seminoles, with 12 doubles, 16 home runs, 65 walks, and 65 strikeouts in 60 games this season.

He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 38th round of the 2016 MLB draft, but did not sign and instead chose to enroll at Florida State University to play college baseball for the Seminoles.

He has bounced between first and third base, playing entirely at third this season. He is viewed more as a first baseman/corner outfielder at the next level.

Welcome to Washington, Drew!
