Nationals Bring Back Ryan Zimmerman for 2021 Season

Per Bob Nightengale, the Washington Nationals will be bringing back “Mr. National” Ryan Zimmerman on a one-year, $1 million deal. The 36-year-old franchise favorite sat out last year due to COVID-19 but will be back on the team for the 2021 season. Zimmerman, now 36, has played in every Nationals season since the team moved to DC from Montreal.

Zimmerman’s statistics haven’t taken too much of a drop off since he has risen in age, even playing better in 2018 and 2019 than he did in 2015 and 2016. Zimmerman is still a force to be reckoned with against lefties hitting, .351/.418/.637 in his last three seasons. Zimmerman will serve as the team’s backup first baseman behind newly acquired Josh Bell.

The Nationals bench along with their roster is now starting fill out as we inch closer to spring training, however, they could still be in play for a big splash among a few of the current free agents.
