Mount St. Mary’s University Women’s Soccer Falls 1-0 to Marist Despite Abby Makela’s 14 Saves

Mount St. Mary’s University women’s soccer fell 1-0 to the Marist Foxes on Oct. 3 at Waldron Family Stadium at the PNC Sports Complex in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Abby Makela made a career-high 14 saves, including a penalty-kick denial in the closing minutes, as the Mountaineers dropped the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match.

Makela recorded a career high in saves for the second consecutive match and now has 78 saves this season. She made six first-half saves to keep the match scoreless at halftime while Marist controlled the pressure.

The Marist Foxes outshot Mount St. Mary’s 13-1 in the first half. Peyton Gallagher recorded Mount’s only first-half chance, while Makela’s six saves preserved the 0-0 score.

Margaret Johnson scored the only goal of the match for Marist by heading in a corner kick from Caroline Liptak. The goal was Johnson’s third of the season.

Fineen Cregan recorded two second-half shots on goal for Mount St. Mary’s, but Marist goalkeeper Samantha Graf saved both attempts. Makela then denied a penalty kick in the closing minutes to keep the Mountaineers within one goal.

Mount St. Mary’s University women’s soccer looks ahead to Niagara

With the loss, Mount St. Mary’s stands 2-7-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Mountaineers are scheduled to travel to Niagara on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Makela’s 14-save performance was the central individual effort in the match, marking her second consecutive career high in saves. Mount St. Mary’s limited Marist to one goal, but the Mountaineers’ one first-half chance and two second-half shots on goal did not produce an equalizer.
