Morgan State takes a tough loss at Akron

Jeff Lange, Akron Beacon Journal

The Morgan State Bears fell to the Akron Zips 24-21 due to a costly fourth-quarter fumble returned for the game-winning touchdown.

Morgan State came into this game 1-0 after a 17-10 victory over Richmond to open the season. Akron came into this game 0-1 after a 24-21 loss to Temple.

With some tight defense being played on both sides both teams lost their starting quarterbacks in this game. Both defenses held their opposing offense to under 300 total yards and forced multiple turnovers.

After the Bears went down 17-7 to end the first half they would shut the Zips offense out for the rest of the game and intercept three passes off of backup quarterback Jeff Undercuffler Jr. This would set up third-string quarterback Deuce Taylor and the Bears’ offense up for two second-half touchdowns to put them up 21-14 in the fourth quarter with 59 seconds to go. After two Zips timeouts were called the ball was handed off to running back J.J. Davis who was hit in the backfield by Akron’s CJ Nunnally IV which forced a fumble that was recovered and returned for a go-ahead touchdown by Bryan McCoy which would essentially end this game.
