The McDaniel College women’s soccer team suffered its first loss in six games, falling 2-1 to No. 9 Messiah in a nonconference match Sept. 16 at Shoemaker Field in Grantham, Pa. McDaniel College entered the match with a 3-1-2 record.
Messiah scored twice in the first half to take a 2-0 lead. Addi Martin scored in the 21st minute with an assist from Hannah Lashley, and Molly Adams added a goal in the 38th minute assisted by Mia Libby.
Alaina Miller Scores in the Second Half
Alaina Miller cut the deficit in half with her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 55th minute. Hariette Ngwatung assisted on the goal, and Miller has recorded points in four of McDaniel College’s six games this season.
The goal was McDaniel College’s first against Messiah in the last three meetings and ended a scoreless stretch of just over 234 minutes. Messiah entered the match with a 2-1-2 record.
Messiah Controls First-Half Chances
Messiah held a 9-1 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks during the first half. Sierra Ruehl made two saves before halftime, and McDaniel College recorded a team save on Messiah’s first shot less than six minutes into the match.
Messiah totaled 14 shots and eight corner kicks in the second half, with four shots on goal. Ruehl made four more saves after halftime to finish with six in the match.
McDaniel College was receiving votes in the Tuesday Intercollegiate Women’s Soccer Organization for Coaches Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll. The loss also ended McDaniel College’s run of allowing no goals since the season opener at York (Pa.) on September 1.
Upcoming Centennial Conference Play
McDaniel College opens Centennial Conference play Saturday against Bryn Mawr at the Soccer Complex at noon.

McDaniel College entered the match at 3-1-2 and had not lost in its first six games. Messiah’s two first-half goals created the difference, while Miller’s second-half goal provided McDaniel College’s only score.
McDaniel College will look to bounce back in conference play against Bryn Mawr.
