McDaniel College women’s field hockey defeated Batten University 3-2 in the second overtime Saturday in Virginia Beach, Va., as junior Anna Buyse scored with four seconds remaining. The victory gave McDaniel College its second straight win and improved its record to 3-4.
Buyse scored twice and netted the game-winning goal off an assist from junior Kathryn Morin. The goal was Buyse’s third of the season and marked her second consecutive game-winner.
McDaniel College builds an early lead
After a scoreless first quarter, McDaniel College took a 1-0 lead less than four minutes into the second quarter when Buyse scored off a feed from sophomore Caydence Stone. Batten University entered the game with a 5-4 record, but goalkeeper Lora Scarangello stopped all three of the opponent’s second-quarter shots to preserve the lead at halftime.
Batten University tied the game 39 seconds into the fourth quarter. Junior Charley Noah then put McDaniel College back in front on a penalty stroke with less than four minutes remaining. However, Batten University scored with one second left in regulation to force overtime.
Scarangello keeps McDaniel College alive
Batten University held a 4-2 shot advantage and earned three penalty corners in the first overtime, but Scarangello made four saves to keep the game tied. McDaniel College registered all five shots in the second overtime and earned nine penalty corners before Buyse finished the game.
Scarangello made eight saves overall, including four in the first overtime. McDaniel College remained undefeated in five all-time meetings against Batten University since 2001 and earned its second win in its last three road games.
McDaniel College will travel to No. 8 Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday for a Centennial Conference contest scheduled for 7 p.m.
