Maryland Basketball Wins Secret Scrimmage
As some Maryland fans know, and as some Maryland fans don’t, the Terrapins won their annual “Secret Scrimmage” against Wake Forest yesterday morning. The contest took place at Randolph Macon College, who happens to be rivals for the Terps in their exhibition on November 2nd at the XFINITY Center. Maryland won the scrimmage 78-73.
Since this was just a scrimmage with no fans in attendance, it was set up differently from an exhibition contest or actual game. There were two 16 minute periods, and three overtime situational periods. The first overtime, the Terps started up 4 points, the second overtime, Wake started up 4, and the final OT was strictly walk-ons to get them some work. After the first period, the game was tied at 23, the second period Maryland finished up 4. The Terps would win 10-8 in the first OT, lost 8-4 in the second OT, and won 8-5 in the walk-on period. Everyone’s favorite Terrapin, Andrew Terrell got to see some floor time.
The Terps lost to Wake last season in this scrimmage, but tied the series back up 1-1 with this years win. Sophomore point guard, Anthony Cowan led the Terrapins with 17 points on the day. Sophomore guard/forward, Kevin Huerter added 12 points and 7 rebounds as well. And finally, the projected top 10 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, sophomore Justin Jackson struggled heavily on the day. He finished with 2 points, and went 0-4 from deep. Senior center Michal Cekovsky and freshman guard Darryl Morsell both finished with 10 points a piece. Morsell came off the bench, as did grad transfer Sean Obi, who had 1 point, 5 boards, and 3 assists in 15 minutes of action. Maryland started Cowan, Huerter, Jackson, junior big man Ivan Bender, and Cekovsky. Freshman center Bruno Fernando did not play in the contest as he was not allowed to play but just as a precaution.
For Maryland basketball fans, a win or loss in this means absolutely nothing. Even though Maryland won, it was not set up as a game situation and was just to get the guys some work before the season starts up. With that being said, it is good to see, or hear about that is, how the new Terrapins did in their new uniform.
Maryland’s first game will take place against Stony Brook on November 10th in New York.
