Maryland and Navy Pick Up Wins While Hopkins Loses Again

All season long the third ranked Maryland men’s lacrosse team has dominated a quarter of the game to create separation from their opponent. This trend continued today as they used a 6-1 advantage in the second quarter to beat number five Rutgers 13-9. After trailing 4-1 with 5:45 left in the first quarter Maryland used that 8-5 lead at halftime and never looked back. Senior Jared Bernhardt had 4 goals and 2 assists to lead the Terps. Logan Wisnauskas and Kyle Long added two goals and two assists each. Justin Shockey overcame a slow start to win 15 of 25 face-offs for the winners.

In Annapolis, Spencer Rees had a coming out party for Navy. The senior goalie had 17 saves and one assist in the Mids 13-10 win over Bucknell. This win came in Navy’s first game since a win over Jacksonville on February 28th. The academy has been under a restriction of movement period due to a spike in Covid cases on the yard. Other than a one hour physical activity period the Midshipmen (3-0) were restricted to their rooms. The team was allowed to start practicing on Monday. Patrick Skalniak had two goals and four assists for the winners. Christian Daniel added two goals and two assists.

Mac O’Keefe’s four goals and one assist helped Penn State to an 11-8 win over Johns Hopkins. The Jays led 4-3 early in the second quarter but Penn State went on a 4-0 to take a 7-4 lead. Hopkins would tie it up at 8 but never got over the hump. Four Jays scored two goals each but Connor DeSimone who had 13 goals coming in was held to one assist. Face-offs were also big in this game as Penn State won 18 of 23. Both teams are 2-4 on the season.

Next weekend Penn State travels to Maryland Saturday at 1. Navy hosts Loyola at 2 on CBSSN. Sunday Michigan comes to Homewood for noon start on ESPNU.
