Luciano Acosta’s Two Goals Give DC United Win

DC United defeated Atlanta United FC by a final of 3-1 on Sunday night at Audi Field. The victory snaps a two-game losing streak and gets DC United back into the thick of the hunt in their quest for the sixth and final spot of the MLS playoffs. DC United’s win was their first win against Atlanta United FC this season and snapped their seven-game unbeaten streak.

DC United went up 1-0 on a goal by Luciano Acosta in the 29th minute off a pass from Wayne Rooney. Atlanta United tied it in the 39th minute with Jeff Larentwoicz finding the back of the net. The score would remain tied at one through halftime.

In the second half, Ezequiel Barco received a yellow card for unsporting behavior in the 51st minute. A minute later, Wayne Rooney scored his fourth goal of the season on a PK to put DC United back in front. In the 77th minute, Acosta netted his second goal of the game, his 7th of the season to make it 3-1.

The win gives DC United 30 points and they now trail the Montreal Impact by six points for the sixth and final playoff spot for the Eastern Conference. They also move up a spot in the standings, to seventh place, ahead of the New England Revolution after their draw with the Portland Timbers on Saturday.

DC United will hit the road this Saturday heading to Yankee Stadium to take on New York City FC. Kickoff is at 4:55 p.m. on Univision.
