Local College Hoops Recap

There were mixed results for local college basketball teams as they opened their seasons today, Lets start in Annapolis as Navy beat George Washington 78-71. The Midshipmen opened the game on a 20-7 run and never looked back, John Carter Jr scored 17 points to lead the team. Cam Davis added 15. The Colonials were led by James Bishop and Jamison Battle with 20 points each, Jameer Nelson Jr added 18.

In Baltimore, Mount St Mary’s beat Morgan State 62-55, Jalen Gibbs led the Mount with 18 points while Malik Miller led Morgan with 19 points. Neither team shot it well from three point range. The Mountaineers were 4-22 while the Bears were 3-18. Mount won the board battle 38-32.

UMBC hung around with Georgetown before falling 70-62, Darnell Rogers had 13 points for the Retrievers, Brandon Horvath added 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Hoyas outrebounded UMBC 58-38.

Virginia blew out Towson 89-54 at the Mohegan Sun bubble in Connecticut. Covid reeked havoc with the Tigers’ opener. They were scheduled to play four different schools as the schedule kept changing due to other teams testing issues. Nicolas Timberlake had 19 points in the loss for Towson.

Navy heads to College Park to play the Terps and Mount St Mary’s on Friday and Saturday. The Mountaineers close out the round robin by playing the Terps on Sunday, UMBC heads to St Francis PA on Saturday. Towson plays San Francisco tomorrow in the bubble,
