Lady Terps’ caged Coppin State Eagles in Home Opener

Maryland Women’s Basketball is back at the Xfinity Arena. Building on Monday’s win against UMBC, the Terrapins welcomed the Coppin State Eagles Thursday night 70-47.

The Keys To Victory

Maryland’s defense was the tone-setter.

The second quarter was essentially the Eagles’ final straw. Maryland’s strength is its ability to push the ball. The Eagles gave up 17 points, and let alone pickpocketed 10 times. At times, it was a bad Coppin State in the half court offense that looked out of sorts, lack of ball movement, poor shot selection, and even inbounding the ball at times.

Maryland’s first quarter was something…

At times during the first quarter, the Terps looked uncomfortable. They shot 33% from the field and 27% from three. Again, this team will need time to gel, but at times, the pace of the offense could’ve been better. However, the Eagles came out aggressive and made things challenging. The Terps could learn to slow down in transition at times.

Coppin State, what was that?

Again, it is only the second game of the season, but the Eagles just did not have answers and couldn’t keep up. They scored 4 points in the second quarter that could not be defended. The Terps, in the first two games, held their opponents in single digits for three quarters.

Everything is starting to become clear but with some questions.

The Terrapins’ ceiling is high. As the game progressed, the shooting improved, and the transfers stepped up when needed. However, offensively, some things still need to be cleaned up. It is still too early to see how the rotations will look against ranked opponents.

Other Notes:

Shyanne Sellers reached 400 career assists in the game.

Allie Kubek eclipsed 500 career rebounds in the game.

The Terps are 17-0 all-time against Coppin State.
