Key Takeaways From Brian Newberry’s Weekly Press Conference

Coming off a tough loss and heading into a much needed bye week, Navy football head coach Brian Newberry addressed the media this week. Here are a few key quotes and takeaways from what he had to say.

On the timing of the bye week following a tough loss to Air Force

“I think this [bye week] comes at a really good time for us. I hat to have one after a loss but were a banged up football team and have been for a couple weeks” Newberry stated.

He added “It comes at a good time from a health perspective. There’s a lot of things we need to get cleaned up from a fundamental and technique perspective so it’s gunna allow us an opportunity to do that but for our guys to get rested a little bit, rejuvenated. We’ll take three days this week to practice. It’ll be modified practices, there’ll be some guys that we’re going to have rest, but we got to go to work and get better”

On the offense’s performance from Saturday and if Tai Lavatai should have entered the game earlier

“We talked about getting out physicaled, and I thought we did, but there’s certainly some fundamental things, some technique things that absolutely have to get cleaned up”

“We talked about it, again, it’s hindsight, and Tai did some good things when he got in there he certainly wasn’t playing a real clean game either. Made some mistakes with both quarterbacks and you know my thoughts on Braxton haven’t changed, he’s a freshman making a start against his first college game. The mistakes that freshman make, you know, they’re going to get better.”

On refocusing the team after a tough loss

“My attitude is let’s learn from the past, let’s move forward, and get the things fixed that need to get fixed and go get better”

“There’s a lot to be optimistic about and excited about moving forward”

On Saturday’s defensive performance against Air Force

“I thought we played really really well. As much as we got beat up physically on the offensive side of the football I thought we did the same to them when you watch the tape”

“I was really proud of the way we played on defense, Outside of the big 96 yard touchdown pass which was a dagger they really weren’t able to do much or sustain drives and we were defensively, from a field perspective, in a lot of bad situations that we were able to get out of. I think going into that game I felt like that was the best Air Force offense that we had seen since I’ve been here and really though well”
