Johns Hopkins University women’s volleyball defeated St. Thomas (TX), 3-1, on Sept. 19 at the Bell Center in San Antonio, Texas, snapping a five-match losing streak. Ivy Swafford posted a career-high 24 kills and added 15 digs for a double-double as Johns Hopkins improved to 4-5.
St. Thomas took the opening set, 27-25, but Johns Hopkins answered with three consecutive set victories. The Blue Jays won the second set, 25-19, took the third, 25-22, and closed the match with a 25-21 fourth-set victory at the Trinity Fall Classic.
Ivy Swafford Leads Johns Hopkins University Women’s Volleyball
Swafford finished with 24 kills on a .458 hitting percentage for her second consecutive career high. She also recorded her first double-double of the season with 15 digs.
Johns Hopkins opened the second set with a 7-3 lead after kills from Jordan Price and Celine Ebert and an ace from Swafford. A block by Bethany Sherwood and Swafford later extended the advantage to 13-7, and Ebert delivered the set-clinching kill in the 25-19 victory.
The Blue Jays started the third set with an 8-3 advantage behind kills from Josephine Kinlan, Price and Swafford. Sherwood’s block kept Johns Hopkins ahead 17-15, and an Ebert dump helped set up the 25-22 win.
Johns Hopkins carried that momentum into the fourth set, taking a 7-2 lead on kills from Swafford, Sherwood and Emma Wang. Kinlan’s kill extended the advantage to 14-8, while another Sherwood kill gave the Blue Jays a 20-14 lead. St. Thomas cut the deficit to 23-21, but Johns Hopkins held on to finish the match, 25-21.
Johns Hopkins Returns Against Scranton
Johns Hopkins will return to action Friday, Sept. 25, against Scranton in the Hopkins Invitational. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. inside Goldfarb Gymnasium.
