Johns Hopkins men’s water polo lost close games to Brown, 17-12, and Concordia-Irvine, 17-15, on September 27, 2026, during the Bruno Invitational in Providence, Rhode Island. Mason Hofmann scored a career-high seven goals against Brown and added five points against Concordia-Irvine. The losses dropped Johns Hopkins to 9-6 on the season.
Hopkins Drops Narrow Decision to Brown
Brown took a 4-3 lead after the opening quarter, but Johns Hopkins responded with a three-goal run to take a 6-4 lead in the second period. The Bears answered with three consecutive goals to lead 7-6 at halftime.
Brown then scored four consecutive goals to open the third quarter, building an 11-6 lead. Johns Hopkins was unable to complete the comeback in the 17-12 loss.
Hofmann finished with seven goals, one assist and three ejections drawn. Luke Mendelsohn added three points on two goals and one assist, while Ethan Babel recorded two assists.
Concordia-Irvine Holds Off Johns Hopkins
Johns Hopkins and Concordia-Irvine were tied 5-5 after the first quarter. The Eagles opened the second quarter with three consecutive goals, but Jasper Hirt scored on a five-meter attempt with six seconds remaining before halftime to cut the deficit to two.
Alec Baker scored 18 seconds into the third quarter to bring the game within one goal. Concordia-Irvine responded with two goals, but Johns Hopkins scored three consecutive goals from Phillip Long and Hofmann to tie the game at 13 after three quarters.
The Eagles used a 4-1 run to take a 17-14 lead with 2:39 remaining. Blake Lowe scored 73 seconds later to cut the deficit to two, but Concordia-Irvine held on for the 17-15 victory.
Hofmann finished with three goals, two assists, two ejections drawn and one steal. Phillip Long scored a hat trick and blocked three shots, while Owen Bartlett recorded one goal, two assists, three steals and two ejections drawn. Baker added two goals, one assist, two steals and two drawn kickouts.
Mendelsohn contributed two assists, two ejections drawn, two blocked shots and two steals. Sebastian Isaacs made 11 saves and recorded one assist in goal for Johns Hopkins.
Johns Hopkins Men’s Water Polo Returns Oct. 10
Johns Hopkins returns to action Saturday, Oct. 10, at the McKendree Invitational, facing Saddleback and McKendree.
