Johns Hopkins Mens & Women’s Teams Advance In National Soccer Tournament; McDaniel Eliminated

VARIOUS LOCATIONS – On Saturday, the 2017 NCAA Division III Men’s & Women’s Soccer Tournaments got underway and three of state schools were in the two fields.  Here’s a recap of how each one fared:

2017 NCAA DIVISION III MEN’S SOCCER TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND

Johns Hopkins Blue Jays (15-1-3) vs Desales Bulldogs (12-3-6)

GLASSBORO, N.J. – In their first round game in the men’s tournament at Rowan Soccer Field, the John Hopkins Blue Jays scored one goal in each half to shut out the Desales Bulldogs and advance to tomorrow’s second round against Cabrini University.

During the 18th minute (17:36 mark), Blue Jays started a corner kick that eventually reached Sophomore M/F Achim Younker on the left side.  He would pass to Sophomore D Connor Jacobs mid box and Jacobs would help assist Sophomore F/M Liam Moylan as his shot hit the center of the net and Johns Hopkins got on the scoreboard first with a 1-0 lead.

Less than five minutes into the second half (at the 49:31 mark), Blue Jays Freshman M Alejandro Maclean would do a touch pass to the right inside box.  The recipient was Younker, who would deposit the ball into the inside left post, giving Johns Hopkins a commanding 2-0 lead that held on for the rest of the match.

Saving all three shots he faced for the Blue Jays, was Senior GK Bryan See.  Johns Hopkins out-shot Desales 24-7; including 11-3 on shots on goal.  The Bulldogs had no corner kicks for the match, while the Blue Jays had six of their own.

Tomorrow’s second round tournament game will also be played at Rowan Soccer Field.  Game time is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

2017 NCAA DIVISION III WOMEN’S SOCCER TOURNAMENT

College of Staten Island Dolphins (13-6-1) at Johns Hopkins Blue Jays (16-2-3)

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Johns Hopkins women’s soccer team was rewarded in the 2017 NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament with home field advantage for the first and second rounds.  On Saturday morning at Homewood Field, the Blue Jays took full advantage of that.

Senior F Michelle Santangelo scored two goals with the help of one goal each from teammates Sophomore M Emily Mehas and Sophomore M Jackie Tait (this was Tait’s first goal of the season) and the Blue Jays posted a 4-1 victory to advance to tomorrow’s second round tournament game against the Wilkes Colonels (14-3-3).  Game time is set for 1:00 PM

History was made when College of Staten Island’s Junior M Lauren Smith scored the Dolphins only goal at the 67:17 mark of the second half.  It was the first City University of New York Athletic Conference’s goal on the national stage.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – In a defensive battle at Captain’s Field that would extend past regulation time, the Lynchburg Hornets would score the only goal in the 96th minute of overtime (at 95:56 mark) and eliminated McDaniel Green Terror, 1-0, during the 2017 NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament First Round.
