Jaskin practices as defenseman for Capitals

Capitals winger Dmitrij Jaskin practiced with the team today as a defenseman, the Caps posted on Twitter. Jaskin has been a healthy scratch for most of the season along with teammates Jonas Siegenthaler and Christian Djoos. Jaskin along with Djoos and Siegenthaler have big roles to fulfill on the Caps defense heading into the playoffs.

Following the loss of Michal Kempny, the Capitals recalled Jonas Siegenthaler from Hershey and he has helped step up to fulfill this missing role.

Jaskin has played 36 games for the Caps this season and has recorded two goals and six assists for them. Jaskin played on offense for all of those games.

Jaskin’s versatility could be a huge plus for the Caps. If a player on defense goes down while Jaskin is in the game he could slide to defense to fulfill that role.

The last time the Caps had a offensive player play defense was Brooks Liach in emergency action.

Alongside Djoos, Siegenthaler, and the veterans on the Caps defense Jaskin should fit it and perform in the final two games of the season and in the playoffs.

Jaskin and the Caps are heading into the playoffs. It looks like they will be playing the Hurricanes in the first round.
