It’s Unanimous, the baton has been passed
UFC 234 came complete with last second drama and disappointment when the main event was cancelled due to Robert Whittaker’s emergency hernia surgery derailed his Title fight with Kevin Gastelum. The show must go on, enter Israel Adesanya and Anderson Silva.
The past stepped into the cage against the future, and the future is now. Anderson “The Spider” Silva once considered the most dynamic fighter on the planet succumbed to “The Last Stylebender” at the Rod Laver arena last night. The make shift main event did not disappoint as Adesanya and Silva delivered a three round battle for supremacy. All three judges had Israel Adesanya winning the fight at 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.
Silva being the crafty ring veteran continued to try and lure Adesanya in for a finishing attack. The young striker refused to play into his hands and in turn deployed his own head games with the spider. A dramatic head kick came within inches of sealing Silva’s fate and Adesanya was quick to make it known. A barrage of leg kicks and a stiff jab kept Silva at bay as the stylebender out struck the spider 65-34 in what was clearly the passing of the torch.
Greatness was in the cage last night, but it came in the form of both fighters. The past and the present collided and exploded in a glimpse of the future. Silva may look for another marquee bout against someone like Conor McGregor while Adesanya clearly has his sights set on a Title fight.
