Howard Community College women’s volleyball lost to Montgomery College 3-1 in its home opener Sept. 15 in Columbia, Maryland, but won the third set for its first set victory against the Raptors since 2023.
Montgomery College won the match by set scores of 25-18, 25-21, 21-25 and 25-15. The Raptors, who won Region 20 last season, posted a .201 hitting percentage compared with Howard Community College’s .132.
Montgomery College Takes Early Lead
Montgomery College pulled away in the opening set for a 25-18 win before holding off Howard Community College 25-21 in the second set. The result gave Montgomery College a 2-0 lead in the match.
Howard Community College answered in the third set, earning a 25-21 victory. Zyon Austin and Toriana Curry helped lead the attacks as Howard secured its first set win against Montgomery College since 2023.
Montgomery College closed the match with a 25-15 fourth-set victory. Sofiia Mateshuk and Ladae Clark supplied the attacks that helped the Raptors finish the match.
Zyon Austin Leads Howard Community College
Zyon Austin led Howard Community College with 14 kills and added three digs. Amelia Thomas recorded six kills and two blocks, while Yusra Arenas finished with five kills, two blocks and nine digs.
Toriana Curry contributed four kills, two aces and four blocks. Kira King led Howard Community College with 21 digs and added three aces, while Abigail Nirola recorded 26 assists and eight digs.
Vivian Gonzalez added five digs for Howard Community College.

Howard Community College returns to action Thursday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m. against Frederick Community College.
