Hood College Women’s Volleyball Falls to McDaniel College in Three Sets, Drops to 0-2

The Hood College women’s volleyball team lost to McDaniel College, 3-0, Thursday night in Frederick, Maryland. The Green Terror won 25-11, 25-12 and 25-15 to open its season 1-0, while the Blazers dropped to 0-2.

McDaniel College Sweeps Hood

McDaniel College started the match with a 4-0 lead before the Blazers scored their first point on a service error. Emerson O’Connor recorded the team’s first kill, assisted by Maria Ricketts, and the squad later used service aces from Ricketts and Katie Goddard during a four-point stretch that cut the deficit to 9-6.

McDaniel answered with an offensive run and closed the first set, 25-11. The Blazers fell behind 10-4 in the second set before calling a timeout, but McDaniel maintained its advantage and won the set, 25-12.

The Blazers made their strongest push in the third set. Isabelle Garrett recorded two consecutive kills to tie the set at 5-5, and the team moved ahead 7-5 after a service ace from O’Connor and a kill by Janiyah Thornton.

McDaniel regained the lead and held a 17-13 advantage late in the set. The Green Terror finished the sweep with a 25-15 victory.

Team Leaders

Annika Cortez led McDaniel with seven kills and scored 12 total points. Janiyah Thornton recorded five kills, while Ricketts led the Blazers with six assists and Cam Madden paced the team with eight digs.

Kaylee Comstock tallied 16 assists. Ricketts, O’Connor and Goddard each recorded a service ace, and the Blazers held a 72-67 advantage in total attacks.

Upcoming Schedule

The women’s volleyball team will host a tri-match Saturday, September 5, facing Notre Dame of Maryland University at 11 a.m. and Shenandoah University at 3 p.m.

Maryland Sports Blog Take

The Blazers showed their strongest resistance in the third set, briefly leading 7-5 and finishing with more total attacks than McDaniel. The Green Terror secured the straight-set victory by winning each set.

The tri-match will give the team its next opportunity to earn a victory when it faces Notre Dame of Maryland University and Shenandoah University.
