Season Opens With Tight Contest
The Hood College women’s soccer team opened its 2026 season with a 2-1 loss to the St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s soccer team on Sept. 1 in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. Hood College led 1-0 at halftime before St. Mary’s College of Maryland scored twice in the second half.
Anais Esparza scored Hood College’s goal in the final minutes of the first half, marking her first collegiate goal. Leah Cook and Dani Farias also recorded shots for Hood College.

St. Mary’s College of Maryland tied the game in the 64th minute after a corner kick led to a header under the crossbar. The Seahawks scored the winning goal with eight minutes remaining after another corner-kick sequence.
St. Mary’s outshot Hood College 5-1 in the second half. Marlie DeRenzis made four saves in her collegiate debut.
