Hershey Bears Captain Louie Belpedio Scores Game-Winner in 500th Professional Hockey Game

Hershey Bears captain Louie Belpedio scored the game-winning goal in his 500th professional hockey game as Hershey defeated the Rochester Americans 3-2 in Rochester. The goal was Belpedio’s first of the season and capped the Bears’ first road contest after seven consecutive home games to begin the campaign.

Hershey never trailed and built a 3-0 lead before Rochester scored twice in the third period. The Bears were the final American Hockey League team to play its first road game of the 2026-27 season.

Belpedio Reaches 500-Game Milestone

Belpedio reached the milestone after making his professional debut March 17, 2018, with the Iowa Wild against the Grand Rapids Griffins. The defenseman celebrated the achievement as Hershey’s captain by scoring during a stretch in which the Bears scored twice in 24 seconds.

Petr Sikora gave Hershey a 2-0 lead before Belpedio added the goal that put the Bears ahead 3-0. The goal ultimately stood as the difference in the victory.

“We just played pretty simple to start, honestly. We got out to a nice lead, we kind of got away from it a little bit, took some penalties, let them back into the game,” Belpedio said after the contest. “But we finished it off in the third and we’re happy to come out of the game with two points on the road.”

Rochester Pushes Back in the Third Period

Aidan McDonough and Carson Meyer scored for Rochester 84 seconds apart on successive Rochester shot attempts against Hershey goaltender Cal Petersen. The goals cut the Americans’ deficit to one after the Bears had taken control early.

Hershey limited Rochester to four shots on goal in the third period and protected its lead to secure the win.

“The game can change really quick, and it did – they were out of the game,” Hershey Bears head coach Derek King said. “We were all over them, and then they popped the one up the middle there, and then a bad play on the draw there, so it changed. But I like the fact that we stood our ground and stayed with the program, and kept wearing them down.”

King Praises Hershey Bears Captain

King credited Belpedio’s physical play and leadership after the milestone performance. He also pointed to the defenseman’s ability to help the team respond when momentum shifts.

“That’s 500 games of hard hockey. That’s just the way he plays, and obviously our fans know that. He’s always hitting, blocking shots, doing all the little things, and that’s a lot,” King said of Belpedio’s career. “His body probably feels like it’s a thousand games, but good for him.”

“He’s just a smart hockey player. He’s really good when the momentum shifts,” King said. “He knows when to get the guys going on the bench and talk to them and calm things down, and he brings that presence – that’s why he’s our captain.”

Belpedio said the milestone reflected the ups and downs of his career. He also discussed balancing hockey with his responsibilities as a husband to Alyssa and a father to Bre.

“Yeah, it means a lot. I’m just thankful to be able to come to the rink every day and play the game that I love so much,” Belpedio said. “I’ve experienced a lot of ups and downs, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. I just want to just keep going and keep having fun with it.”
