True freshman quarterback Tahj Smith came into his first colligate start and put on a show for the Morgan State Bears. His two touchdown passes led to a 24-17 win over Delaware State on Saturday.

Smith got it done through and on the ground. The true freshman quarterback accounted for 197 of the Bears 247 yards of total offense. Redshirt Junior running back J.J. Davis had a big game as-well rushing for 75 yards and a touchdown averaging 6.8 yards per carry.

The Delaware State Hornets did not finish this game without a fight. After coming out of  halftime down 10-0 the Hornets would find themselves down 17-0 after a 53-yard touchdown to Tyler Wilkins.

Redshirt sophomore Marquis Gillis would strike back with a touchdown of his own from 18-yards out. The Hornets would strike again late in the third on a Jaden Sutton 4-yard run to cut Morgan’s lead to 14-17.

On the ensuing possession Smith would cap off a seven play 55-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Anthony James Jr.

With the score at 14-24 the Hornets would send out sophomore kicker Nathan Wilson and hit a 25-yard field goal. This would make it a one score game and set up an onside kick, which the Bears would recover and end this game.

With this win the Bears remain in playoff contention and keep their Celebration Bowl hopes alive.

Morgan State now looks to travel to Orangeburg, South Carolina to compete in another pivotal MEAC game against the South Carolina State Bulldogs on Saturday Nov. 12.
