The Harrisburg Senators fell to the Akron RubberDucks 8-6 in 10 innings Aug. 18 in Akron, Ohio. Dean Curley hit a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th to give Akron the walk-off victory after Harrisburg tied the game in the ninth.
Harrisburg Senators Build an Early Lead
Harrisburg took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Branden Boissiere drove in Nick Mitchell with a sacrifice fly, and Elijah Green followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Devin Fitz-Gerald.
Ryan Cesarini homered on the first pitch from Alex Clemmey in the bottom of the inning to cut Akron’s deficit to 2-1. The Senators loaded the bases in the second inning but did not score.
After Green drew a walk to open the third, Ethan Petry hit a two-run home run that cleared the right-field wall. The homer extended Harrisburg’s lead to 4-1.
Akron RubberDucks Take the Lead
The RubberDucks cut the deficit to 4-3 in the fourth inning when Bennett Thompson hit a two-run double with two outs. Akron then moved in front in the fifth on Aaron Walton’s three-run home run to center field with runners on second and third, putting Akron ahead 6-4.
Clemmey left after 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and five walks while striking out three. Harrisburg answered with a sixth-inning run when Boissiere singled with two outs to drive in Kervin Pichardo, cutting Akron’s lead to 6-5.
The Senators’ bullpen kept the game within reach. Sandy Gaston threw 1.1 scoreless innings and struck out three, Ben Grable pitched a scoreless seventh inning with two strikeouts, and Joe Glassey retired the side in order in the eighth on seven pitches.
Grable and Glassey have each thrown five scoreless outings since joining Harrisburg. Luke Young then pitched a one-two-three ninth inning and struck out one to send the game to extra innings.
Dean Curley Delivers the Walk-Off Hit
Harrisburg tied the game in the ninth after Boissiere doubled down the left-field line to lead off the inning. Devin Ortiz entered as a pinch runner, and Petry followed with a single through the drawn-in infield to score Ortiz and make it 6-6.
Petry has driven in 13 runs in his last six games played. The Senators did not advance the placed runner in the 10th inning, giving Akron an opportunity to end the game in the bottom half.
Robert Cranz struck out the first two hitters in the bottom of the 10th inning. Curley then hit a two-run home run with two outs to give the Akron RubberDucks an 8-6 victory, with Cranz suffering the loss and being listed with a 3-2 record.
Harrisburg Senators Schedule
Harrisburg is scheduled to play again Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. Josh Randall is listed as the scheduled starter and has a 4-5 record.
