Goucher College women’s volleyball defeated Gwynedd Mercy University 3-1 on Sept. 26 in Baltimore, Maryland, completing a sweep of its home tri-match. Goucher won the first, third and fourth sets by scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-12, while Gwynedd Mercy University took the second set 25-21.
Goucher College finished the match with a .263 hitting percentage, six blocks, 60 digs and 12 service aces. Gwynedd Mercy University recorded a .102 hitting percentage, four blocks, 50 digs and 12 aces.
Goucher College Women’s Volleyball Wins Three Sets
Gwynedd Mercy University opened the match with five consecutive points, but Goucher College answered with kills from Alex Dzhygit, Kelsi Hockaday, Juliana Stoneberg and Caroline Carter. The Gophers tied the first set at 12-12 before an Athena Savick service ace helped give Goucher a 17-14 advantage.
After Gwynedd Mercy University tied the set at 20-20, a Dzhygit kill, a Grace Prusmack ace and a Gwynedd Mercy attack error put Goucher back in front. Kills from Prusmack and Hockaday closed out the 25-21 opening-set victory.
Gwynedd Mercy University built a 10-3 lead in the second set and held off Goucher’s late push. Kills by Dzhygit and Carter helped Goucher cut into the deficit, and a Savick ace brought the Gophers within three points before the Griffins secured the set, 25-21.
Goucher responded in the third set with an early lead behind a Carter kill and a four-point run that included a kill by Kanay Parham. Gwynedd Mercy University tied the set at 13-13, but Goucher answered with four consecutive points, highlighted by a block from AaShyah De Vries and Parham, and went on to win 25-16.
Goucher carried that advantage into the fourth set, opening with four straight points that included a Sofia Ortiz service ace. Kills from Hockaday, Parham and Carter helped extend the lead to 12-3, while Stoneberg, De Vries and Dzhygit later contributed kills during a 20-10 Goucher advantage.
Makayla Nasibi added a service ace to make it 23-11. Stoneberg followed with a kill, and a Gwynedd Mercy error sealed Goucher’s 25-12 set win and 3-1 match victory.
Goucher College Women’s Volleyball Leaders
Dzhygit and Carter led Goucher College with 12 kills apiece. Ortiz recorded 18 assists, and Prusmack added 13 assists in the four-set victory.
Savick led Goucher with 14 digs, while Carter added 10. Ortiz and Savick each recorded three service aces, and Parham led the Gophers with five blocks.
Kate Etter led Gwynedd Mercy University with 12 kills and 13 digs. Emma Hastings recorded three blocks for the Griffins.
Next Match for Goucher College Women’s Volleyball
Goucher College is scheduled to host Washington College (Md.) on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. The Gophers are then scheduled to open conference action against Susquehanna University on Friday, Oct. 2.
